In our previous blog, we discussed just a few of the noises you might hear coming from your HVAC unit and what they mean. In part two of this multi-part series, we will talk about four more noises you might hear from your unit such as squealing and screeching, clicking, popping, and thumping, clanking, or banging.
If you hear any of these noises coming from your HVAC unit, don’t panic. Your first instinct might be to call an HVAC contractor right away, but it’s better to have an idea of what is causing the noise so that the contractor can assess whether this problem needs immediate attention or it can wait until the next day. For any problems with your HVAC system, call our HVAC company. Our team of experts are highly-trained and can help you with any problem or noise that may arise. Squealing and Screeching
If you hear a drawn-out screech or squeal when you first turn on your unit, it could mean that you have a bad belt or motor bearing. Depending on how loud or harsh the squealing is, the problem could easily be fixed with some lubrication. Try spraying some WD-40 on the belt and motor. If this doesn’t solve the problem, it’s time to call a professional.
Luckily, the belt and motor bearing are fairly inexpensive to replace and our team of experts can get your HVAC system up in running in no time! However, if you choose not to fix the problem right away, the parts could end up breaking and in turn, could cause damage to other elements of your system. Waiting too long could end up costing you more than it would have if you called the professionals right away.
With the arrival of the colder months, many people are turning on their heating systems for the first time since the year before. Hearing a clicking sound as you turn on your heating system for the first time is a good thing — it means that your system is working. On the other hand, if you have had your system on for awhile and you’re still hearing clicking, it means that there is a problem.
Clicking could mean that you have a problem or disruption with your system relay, especially if the clicking is coming from your control panel or outside compressor. The best thing you can do is monitor the frequency of the clicking and if it persists, call our HVAC company and discuss possible solutions with one of our experts.
Hearing a popping sound coming from your HVAC system when you least expect it can be frightening, however, a popping sound is actually the least threatening of all the sounds you could hear.
If you’re hearing a popping sound as your system turns on and off, it’s nothing to worry about. The popping you hear is just the ducts expanding from the air flow. If the noise is driving you crazy, you could try adding either foam or rubber insulation, otherwise, it’s best to just let it be.
Thumping, Clanking, or Banging
Unlike the sound of popping, thumping, clanking, or banging are not sounds you want to be hearing. If you hear any of these three sounds, it could mean trouble. Look around to see if you can locate the source of the sound. If you notice that the noise is coming directly from your HVAC unit, it could mean that there is a problem with the blower assembly. To minimize the damage, turn off your system completely and call a professional right away.
